Facebook is a social media site where a person may join up with their own name, create a profile, add pictures and details, and then communicate with other people on the site. Twitter is a social media site where a person may also set up a profile with images and details and then communicate with other members. Both allow the user to talk to anyone (within reason), but they both do this in very different ways.
With Facebook a person may send a private message to another person, whereas with Twitter the messages are more public. The posting system is also very different, but that will be explained later. Here are a few comparisons with the social media site and how they affect SEO (Search Engine Optimization). This article deals with SEO regarding Google (the world’s largest search engine).
Which is the most popular?
Facebook has the most followers. In-fact, Twitter is a massive social media network and yet does not even have a quarter of the audience that Facebook. However, this does not mean that one has more SEO power than the other. Google regards Twitter and Facebook with equal measure when it comes to SEO. This does not mean one cannot be used for SEO more than the other, but the manner in which this works is not important. All you need to know is that if you are looking for an SEO benefit, then it is better to have support from both Facebook Fans and Twitter followers.
Which is better for blog promotion?
On an SEO level, it seems that Facebook takes the edge. With Facebook you can share your entire blog post with a link attached. If your share is re-shared to a great extent then the search engines will take notice. This sort of thing cannot really happen with Twitter; therefore Facebook comes out the winner in this one. However, that does mean that Facebook is better for blog promotion.
Twitter is actually the better one for blog promotion, because you can micro blog about your blog. You can actually go to the extreme of nagging people to look at your blog. You will lose a few followers, but you will lose far less than if you were to have started nagging on Facebook. With Twitter you also have a targeting advantage, as your followers are already following you because they like what you write–so they are bound to like your blog.
Which is better for website promotion?
With Facebook you can add large posts, image posts, videos, links on their own, etc. With Twitter you may only micro blog. This means that if you want to promote your website with Twitter then you are restricted. Again, it seems that Facebook is going to be the best for SEO promotion. You may add links, get people chatting, get people sharing, re-sharing and “liking”, and these are all SEO effectors. With Twitter you may only get people Tweeting, linking and Re-tweeting. There are less SEO effectors.
Which is the most engaging?
It is an unfair question as Twitter is more engaging to people who like reading micro blogs, and Facebook is not. However, from SEO terms, how can we judge which SEO effectors are going to be the best for your website or blog?
The answer would seem to lie in links. A link from a Twitter and from a Facebook profile is going to have an SEO effect. It is not going to be as powerful as a link from a website, but it will still have an SEO effect. Which is stronger? Neither, they are both the same.
If you have 30 re-tweets with your link on then would it have a more powerful SEO effect? Yes, it would, but the same could be said for if an image on your blog gets 30 “likes” from Facebook.
